Alaska 2010 Daily News and Photo:
June 1st At Sea,
At sea is kind of an understatement on today. We woke up to fog heavy enough that you couldn't see the shore line when we were close to it. As we came out of the inside section and in to open water the fog turned to low clouds and drizzle. Seas were running 1.5' to 4' with winds about 20 mph. With the cloud cover the way it is the sunset photos will have to wait for another day.
As far as wildlife we have seen one pair of dolphins.
The weather is supposed to get better as the week goes on and as we get back in closer to land I'm sure the wildlife action will pick up. Wednesday is Ketchikan and wandering around town and Creek Street taking photos.
While running through the narrow passages between the islands the ships are required to have a pilot onboard that knows the area. When you leave the narrow areas Canada wants their pilot back. We were lucky enough to have it happen on our side of the ship. They open a doorway on the side of the ship and the pilot boat matches speed with the ship. I would guess that we slowed to about 10 Knots. When speeds are matched the pilot steps over to his boat.
This was pretty much the highlight of the day other than the food. It is really hard to beat. To work it off you can go out and walk around the ship. Not inside but outside. There is one clear deck that runs all of the way around the ship. 2.8 rounds is equal to 1 mile. I have been out doing my laps and will continue to do so on at sea days. Port days I will get plenty of walking in.
Hopefully for you and I tomorrow will be a better photo day.
