Alaska 2010 Daily News and Photo:
June 4th Skagway, Alaska,
Greetings from Skagway, Alaska home of the Yukon gold rush.
I'm sure most of you have seen the programs on TV or read in books about the the gold rush and the prospectors that had to pack 2000 pounds of supplies over the pass to get to Canada and the gold fields.
Eventually a railroad was built along that trail. It was and is called the Yukon White Pass Railroad. There are still two steam powered locomotives and a number of diesel electrics that haul passengers over that route. Freight service and year around service ended a number of years ago.
The dates for our cruise were based around the chance to ride behind the pride of WPYR # 73. While the skies didn't behave the best for photography we had a great time and I did manage to pull a few good shots out of the hat. We rode from Skagway to Fraser Meadows and back. You can click on the photo at the left for a larger image. The extra shot is a view from up near Fraser.
We sailed at 8:00 PM AK time this evening and will arrive at Glacier Bay for a day of cruising on Saturday. |
