This time of the year here in the Willamette Valley the American Gold Finches show up to feed and breed. If you can afford the sunflower seeds or Niger seed the little guys are more than happy to hang around your yard. With their bright yellow they can help brighten up any day.
Evening Grosbeaks
I was lucky enough yesterday to have a number of pairs of adult Evening Grosbeaks come through the place and clean out the sunflower seed feeders. I have the Black Headed Grosbeaks here most of the year but seem to only catch their cousins as they are passing through. The Evenings were here for a…
Fern Season
I realized that nowhere on my site did I have the mandatory image of the new growth fern unrolling in the spring. That issue has now been corrected. If you have never picked one of these things so you can really look at it close you…
Spring In The Old Growth
Spring in the old growth is one of those hard to beat things in life. A walk or hike up there is one of the best reasons to miss work. Just call it a mental health day. This shot was taken just down river from Sahalie Falls on the McKenzie River in the Oregon Cascade…
More preset play
I really like this one. They call it B&W Platinum. If you click on the small image to look at the larger one you will see where the areas of black with a lot of bright reflection on them do have a platinum look to them. I did a little corner darkness and toned down…
High and Loving It
I’ve been playing with some some black and white presets for Lightroom that I ran across. This latest batch of presets is supposed to be representative of the results you might get from some of the older b&w films. this is realizing that the film is only part of the final look. Papers and chemicals…
Sparrows and Bird Baths
With the return of Spring and the migrating birds there is always the chance of getting in some backyard bird shooting. Due to the way may yard is arraigned, one of the best shooting spots is from in the kitchen with the window open and the screen off the window. Needless to say after a…
Upcoming Art Show
I was asked today if I could come up with some images for a show that will be running in June. I was very happy to get the invitation as the show is at one of the galleries covered on the Eugene First Friday Art Walk. They are looking for “fine art” type images and are really leaning towards black and white.
What a shame! Asking me for black and whites.. The kind of request I love. I am entering one pretty recent image. Actually it is hanging in a current show. I will be entering two images that are old stand by’s for me. They both date back to 2005. The images are below. Please feel free to comment on them.
Raindrops On Yellow
In many locations the saying “April showers bring May flowers” is a very real thing. Here in the Willamette Valley of Oregon the blooms start well before May with some of them starting as early as February. This yellow tulip was just about bloomed out but I did manage to fine one petal that was…
Earth Day 2011
I think Earth Day is one of the better ideas they have come up as far as special days to celebrate. They have golf day, coffee cup day, wash your dog day and so many others that they are starting to overlap. I feel Earth Day is one of the needed ones.
This is really a cause that needs more discussion being that humans have determined to overpopulate the earth and destroy it. While man tries to keep the universe from evolving to keep the earth from changing they can’t figure out how to put a candy bar wrapper or an empty water bottle back in their pocket and carry it back to their fancy car that they spent 10’s of thousands of dollars on so they can end pollution. Throw the trash on the ground but the air will be clean! How many tons of coal did they burn in Japan or Korea to build the car that will save the world while they drive around throwing McDonald’s bags out the window.
Alright, I’m done ranting. I hope you enjoy the photographs. They are a mix of my work from the deserts of California to the glaciers of Alaska. Please remember, take only photographs and memories. Leave only foot prints and if you leave the trail please watch where you step.
