A project I have been going to do for a long time is to add a “picture window” to a wall in my kitchen. The wall is at the end of the table and is actually the wall with the garage on the other side of it. It was obvious, even to me, that just knocking a window into the wall wasn’t going to create much of a view unless you wanted to stare at a ’56 Studebaker with a car cover over it. Trust me it is not a view that will take your breath away.
I had been looking around for an old multi lite window for some time and recently found what I wanted in the back of a friends pickup on it’s way to the building recycle center. It is about 31″ X 27″ inside. Should you decide to take on a similar project yourself the recycle centers or a window instillation company maybe the key for you not paying a small fortune for a window.
The window has had the old flaking paint scrapped off of it, sanding done and it now has two coats of primer on it. That will be followed by two finish coats. I didn’t get too carried away going for a perfectly smooth finish as I want it to have an old and slightly distressed look. It will match me and the rest of the house that way.
After the finish coats of paint are on I will install the glass and set thin strips of mat board on the inside to hold the prints away from the glass. The next step will be the tough one in deciding on the image. It will be a scenic / landscape and it can not be too seasonal as I don’t want to be looking at a snow image when it’s cold or Death Valley when it is hot. We will see where that leads. Needless to say, wife will have input on this part of it.
When I get the print I will cut the pieces to fit in the frames and mount them to foam board. Don’t forget in doing this to cut out and throw away the thin strips of the print to match the thickness of the inner frames or your sections of the image will not line up correctly.
I will add more images as the project moves along.
I was asked for a photo of the wall. The hummers will come down and go in J’s office at work and the outlet cover will be replaced with standard white do it doesn’t compete.
Update 02-05-13: All coats of paint are on the frame and the image has been sent to the printer.
And the after shot… the window is in.
